The USHEPiA beneficiaries can be divided into two groups by the nature of the programmes they participate in. The core of the project, and funding, are the Fellows who participate in full degree postgraduate study and are described as ‘cohorts’. In addition, over the years, funding has been sourced to assist fellows in furthering their academic career. These are the recipients of ‘small grants’, which have been aimed at furthering their intellectual endeavours and encouraging research and publication.
Following the wishes of the USHEPiA Grant donors and the International Steering Committee, a strong effort is always made to identify and select women applicants with potential and quality. The aim is to offer 50% male, 50% female Fellowships whenever possible.
56 degrees have been awarded to date. We have had 3 withdrawals, 1 failure and 3 deaths. The rest of the Fellows are still to complete. In the years that funding was available, 18 small grants were disbursed.
TO DATE, NOT ONE FELLOW HAS LEFT THE CONTINENT OF AFRICA
